The photograph
Behind every page: Old green doors (52829255556), by Jernej Furman from Slovenia, used under CC BY 2.0. It was found on Wikimedia Commons on 2026-09-16.
What we changed: Cropped by tools/crop.mjs through Chrome's canvas (1.5% off the dark left edge; there is no image library on this machine and sips crops only about the centre), then softened and toned by tools/make-ground.mjs: blur 3px, saturate 1.1, brightness 0.92. The original file is never served.
Why this one: Teal shutters held shut by an iron bolt and a padlock, with rosemary in flower in front of them. Hasp is about shutting what was left open, and this is that, photographed: a fastening doing its job on something ordinary and cared for, with no screen, coin or shield in it. It was a DECISION, taken against nine other Commons candidates that were all measured the same way (tools/photo-stats.mjs, data/photo-candidates.json). A red barn hatch over a buttercup meadow (cand-02) measured more chroma and was kept as the fallback; it was not chosen because its fastening is a wooden turn-button that does not read as a lock at page size. What measurement decides is the crop and the tone, and whether glass over the flat teal planks still reads as textured.
